Project Overview

Design coordination for a microgrid site that initially came in as a HV metered scheme. The site had space for only a single substation, requiring the design team to work with the client on export management so the arrangement could be delivered as a unit substation. The scheme also included adopted street lighting, requiring both the microgrid and street lighting designs to be coordinated together.

Challenges

01

Initial HV metered arrangement

The scheme was originally received as a HV metered site, which did not align well with the available space on site.
02

Single substation space constraint

Only one substation could be accommodated, making the standard HV metered arrangement impractical for the site layout.
03

Microgrid and adopted lighting interface

The site included both microgrid infrastructure and adopted street lighting, requiring careful coordination between the two design scopes.

DACI Solution

1. Export management review

The client was engaged to manage the site export position so the design could be progressed as a unit substation arrangement.

2. Unit substation solution

The design was developed around a single unit substation, reducing spatial impact while supporting the required network arrangement.

3. Coordinated design delivery

Both the microgrid and adopted street lighting designs were completed with coordinated interfaces, helping maintain a consistent and practical overall design.

Outcome

The scheme was optimised from the initial HV metered arrangement into a unit substation solution suitable for the available site space. By working with the client to manage export, the design avoided the need for additional substation space and supported a practical delivery route. The microgrid and adopted street lighting designs were also coordinated together, providing a joined-up design solution for adoption and construction.
