Project Overview

DACI was appointed to deliver the coordinated multi-utility design for a residential development requiring fully compliant electrical and water infrastructure for adoption under IDNO and NAV frameworks.

The scheme involved the integration of HV/LV electrical networks and a potable water system, all aligned to a dynamic development programme. A key requirement was to ensure that designs progressed efficiently through approvals while maintaining flexibility to respond to ongoing changes in layout and scope.

Key Challenges

01

Evolving design and variation orders

The project evolved through multiple design iterations, with variation orders introduced as the development progressed. This required continuous refinement of both electrical and water designs, ensuring that each revision remained compliant while aligning with updated site layouts.
02

Parallel multi-utility coordination

Coordinating the design of multiple utilities in parallel added further complexity, particularly where route optimisation, substation siting and service distribution needed to be revisited at different stages of the programme.
03

Timely IDNO and NAV adoption approvals

Achieving timely adoption approvals from IDNO and NAV providers required careful management of design standards, documentation and stakeholder coordination, ensuring that no delays were introduced at key approval gateways.

DACI Solution

1. Flexible, design-led approach

DACI adopted a flexible, design-led approach, allowing the scheme to evolve without compromising technical integrity or programme alignment. Electrical and water networks were developed in parallel, ensuring consistency across utility corridors and efficient use of available space.

2. Optimised substation siting and distribution

Substation siting and HV/LV distribution were optimised to support both current demand and future expansion, while plot-level connections were designed to ensure a seamless interface with the wider development.

3. Continuously refined water network

For the water network, routes were continuously refined to reflect site changes, maintaining compliance with NAV requirements and ensuring efficient long-term operation.

4. Proactive revision management

Throughout the process, DACI managed design revisions proactively, maintaining clear documentation and coordination to support smooth approval and handover. This structured yet adaptable methodology ensured that design progression remained controlled, despite the evolving nature of the scheme.

Outcome

DACI successfully delivered a fully coordinated, compliant multi-utility design ready for adoption, supporting the development’s programme and long-term infrastructure requirements.

Despite multiple design revisions, all utilities were aligned and approved, demonstrating the robustness of the design approach and the team’s ability to manage change effectively.

The final design provides a reliable, future-ready infrastructure solution, with optimised electrical and water networks that support efficient installation, adoption and ongoing operation.
